Official diplomatic relations between Brazil and Qatar began in 1974, three years after the independence of Qatar.
The Chancellor Hamad Bin Jassem Al Thani travelled to Brazil in 1994 for the first official visit of high-ranking representatives from both countries. On this occasion the Chancellor proposed the opening of embassies in the two capital cities, Brasilia and Doha. The Qatari diplomatic mission was opened in 1997, but was closed in March 1999 because of the lack of reciprocity by Brazil, which could not fulfill its part in the agreement due to difficult financial circumstances at that time.
In 2005, during an official visit to Qatar, Chancellor Celso Amorim informed H.H. the Emir of the decision of the Brazilian Government to open an Embassy in Doha, which took place in April of the same year. The Embassy of Qatar in Brasilia was reopened in June 2007.
